Walgreens 101

Walgreens fans will tell you that this is one of the best places to score fantastic deals! But, until you get the hang of their lingo and coupon rules you may find it a bit challenging. Here are some things that can help you out in the beginning. Before you know it you will be a Walgreens expert!

Balance Rewards Program

First things first, you’ll need to sign up to be part of the Balance Rewards Program. This allows you to access the sales prices and earn your balance rewards points, that you can use to pay like cash on purchases! Signing up is simple, you can go HERE to sign up online or sign up in store. Once you are signed up you can enter your telephone number at checkout to score the weekly sale prices and rewards!

Ways To Save

There are two great ways you can score deals at Walgreens! First, the in-ad coupons that you can find each week. You can also stack these coupons with a manufacturer coupon for even better savings!

Second, the monthly savings book that’s located with the weekly ad as you first walk in the store. They are full of coupons that are good for that particular month. Again, these can be stacked with manufacturer coupons. Another perk – no clipping needed! Just let them scan the book and the coupon will be applied to all qualified purchases! I have scored some great freebies this way!

Register Rewards

Register Rewards are one of the best parts about saving at Walgreens. These are like a catalina in that it prints from the register after your purchase. Each week the Walgreens ad will list the Register Rewards deals, or you can also check in store on the sale tags. They are used just like cash towards future purchases, and usually have a 2 week span until expiration.

Something to keep in mind is that RR are a limit of 1 per transaction. If you buy 5 Rockstar drinks at one time you will not get 5 ($1) RR, you have to buy them in separate transactions. You also cannot use the Rockstar RR to buy another Rockstar if you want to earn another RR. However, you can use your $1 RR from the Rockstar to buy, say Crest toothpaste, that is triggering a RR. This is called rolling your Register Rewards!

Balance Rewards Points

Balance Rewards Points are another great perk of Walgreens. Again, check the weekly ads to see what is on sale and generating points. Remember, in order to earn your points at the register you HAVE to enter your phone number or scan your Walgreens card!

Unlike RR, points don’t have to be broken up into separate transactions! You can stack a points deal with a RR deal and use your manufacturer coupon. We LOVE stacking savings!!

You can earn multiple points in a single transaction, there is no limit on how many times you can receive points from the same promotion! Something to keep in mind is that point deals are NOT cumulative, if you need to spend $30 on Schick to earn X points you will need to do it all at one time. Your new points will always show on your receipt after a transaction, along with your new points balance!

Redeeming Your Balance Reward Points

You have to have at least 1,000 points to redeem them. Here is a chart that tells you the increments you can redeem in:

(1) 1,000 Points = $1.00
(2) 2,000 Points = $2.00
(3) 3,000 Points = $3.00
(4) 5,000 Points = $5.00
(5) 10,000 Points = $10.00
(6) 18,000 Points = $20.00
(7) 30,000 Points = $35.00
(8) 40,000 Points = $50.00

Obviously, you will benefit from them the most if you save them until you have accumulated 40,000. Walgreens has changed things up a bit as it used to be you couldn’t use points and earn them. This is not the case anymore!

Coupon Ratio

The most important thing to remember when couponing at Walgreens is that Walgreens will not accept more coupons than you have items for! For example, if you buy 10 items and you are using 10 manufacturer coupons + 1 store coupon AND paying with a Register Reward… the machine counts it as 12 coupons. This is where those filler items we mentioned earlier come in! Always remember to have something in your cart for the total number of coupons and RR you plan on using.

Learning these basics should have you shopping at Walgreens in no time at all! We hope this helps you as you head out to shop at your local store.
